Claire

INTERRUPTION

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 10, 1944

I’m bent over an algebra problem when we hear a

quick knock on the schoolhouse door.

Pete barges in, locates me with his eyes.

“Excuse me, miss, I need

to take Claire home.”

He stands at the door,

fidgeting with the dirty cap he’s taken off his head,

his eyes flitting nervously.

Pete coming to pick me up cannot mean anything good.

Miss VerWys stands,

smooths her voice like she smooths her dress.

“Yes, of course, Pete.”

My heart pounds and my fingers go numb.

I scoop up my books and scattered papers,

toss them into my bag and throw it over my shoulder,

though Miss VerWys tells me I can leave

my things, get them later.

Other students whisper and wonder.

I know somehow that this knock will be a marker in my life:

that years later, everything leading up to this day

will be the before,

and whatever waits for me at home

will be the after.
